It's hard to believe that it's been a year since we lost Tom Petty. I woke up with "One More Day, One More Night" stuck in my head, and the rest of the day has followed suit. Some time in the last year or so I put together a Spotify playlist of every Tom Petty (with or without the Heartbreakers) song in order of their release - basically just the albums in order, and I plugged in some singles (and the two originals from the Greatest Hits record). It's a nice list to throw on, whether shuffling or in order, and today it proved useful.
I've written before about how much it meant to me to be lucky enough to cover his last show in Cincinnati (and to be one of only six photographers approved), and it rings truer now than it did then. We had no idea back in June of 2017 that the end was just a few short months away. I don't typically have much of a reaction to celebrity deaths, but this one felt more personal. Tom Petty was at once a larger-than-life, mythical, ubiquitous presence, and something like your best friend. Through his songs many of us felt, if we didn't know him, we certainly had something of a kinship with him.
I'm not really going anywhere with this, but it seemed like I needed to mark the occasion somehow. I've been listening to his songs all day, and I'll probably do the same tomorrow. I hope you have a few favorites you'll put on, too.
